I presume that a number of users now have the open-source battery pack report downloader and can provide capacity reports. In the interest of seeing exactly how much the Smart ED battery packs degrade, I think that it would be a good idea to post our reports. Moderator, can this be made sticky?

A bit of background-

My Smart ED went into service April 18 2015. Typically driven 30 mi/45km per day and 80 percent of the time is recharged before going below 50% SOC.

Climate: July average max/min 29C/17C January max/min 1C/-6C Extremes over past 3 years to 35C to -24C.

I like the idea. Wonder if it could be set up somehow to maybe track cars by user names/VIN's so that we could follow on one page/link how the battery in that particular car has aged? It would seem to be cumbersome to scroll through those battery reports in individual messages. Just thinking out loud here. There are already several threads where members have posted their results. Would be nice to have them all in one place.

Yes, just having a list of these reports will quickly get combersome - maybe just reporting the CAP mean value, along with age and mileage and climate the car was operated in would be enough.

I presume nominal capacity of the ED battery pack is 50AH (i.e. the advertised 17.6 kwH/350 avg volts), but most hew packs seem to have about 52 AH - as was indicated on my first annual check. so in my case, my pack degraded maybe 1.5 percent per year.

I believe the capacity of the battery unit is 52.1 ah. There are also two capacities stated in the report, and I thought the consensus was the bottom "CAP Min" value was the one that was accurately representative of the battery's capacity.

I've run a couple of dozen battery reports using Len's device and I seem to notice a couple of things. One is that the capacity is higher when it is warmer. And it is higher after more fully discharging the battery before charging it back up.

I'd be happy to contribute. We need to agree on what parameters to report if we're not publishing the entire output. I'd be in favor of date, odometry, mean battery unit temperature, and the CAP min, max, and mean from the bottom portion of the output. Thoughts?

Wonder if it would be possible to have a thread with a link to a website where we could post some/all of our test results. Kind of like a spreadsheet or some type of a file where we could not only see folks' result, but also to be able to pull up various numbers to compare? Or is that getting more involved and detailed than your original intent? Even if we only do the aH number and conditions, a dedicated "updatable" link would be helpful.

We've got enough computer guys around here that should be able to figure something out.

My estimate that the capacity is nominally 50AH comes from the advertised pack capacity of 17.6 kWh divided by the pack voltage at 50% SOC of 350 volts. (i.e. 3.8 volts per cell *93 cells). This gives almost exactly 50AH.

Based on my experience messing with 2-wheel home-built EV's most lithium cells are designed to a round AH number - but this is a nominal number with an extra margin added for quality control so that all cells in a large order will be at least 50AH. I presume that is why they are typically 52AH in a new ED.

But yes, the worst cell in the chain would dictate the capacity of the whole pack - so the CAP Min (capacity of worst cell) would be the important number..

Just reporting the info you suggested seems ok. From the tests I've downloaded so far, I suspect that the calculated capacity varies with temperature so reporting the the pack temperature is important. Also, considering the history of cars like the LEAF experiencing high degradation in hot climates, some brief climate figures would be good.

This forum allows attaching a file to a post. Every time someone downloads and edits the spreadsheet with their own data they will have to re-upload it to their own post. There will be proliferation of posts - but they will be brief posts.

Well whatever you guys decide, I'll be happy to add the data from my two cars to the mix. I only hope that the data will be useful and easy to compare to others. I think it's a great idea to have the data for the nerds among us. :)

Anybody have negative opinions on the report I was able to pull this morning while one of the Sokoloffs' were in town :)

To me (from reading the BMS wiki page) it seems the battery cells are all very close to each other without any more than 2 cells being outside of the median numbers. 15mv difference between upper and lower cells seems very well indeed.

Yeah, if you're in that 50+ Ah range, I'd call it good too.

So what's the difference in conditions between the results you posted on the other thread and this one? Seems like the other results looked a little better, i.e. Ah all at, near or above 50 while this one is slightly lower. Like to hear input from others on how concerned we should be when the Ah's start to drop below 50.

Kcfoxie, I think the consensus is that the CAP min from the bottom portion of the output represents the actual usable capacity of your HV battery as it is practically limited by the weakest cell of them all. So that would be 47.9, or a loss of 8.1% of capacity. However, my experience has been that a deeper discharge to 20% or less, followed by charging to 100%, increases the reported cell capacities. It also looks like it is relatively cool where you are, and warmer temperatures also increase the reported cell capacities.

During our mild winters, my capacity was just under or around 50 ah, and has steadily increased as summer is approaching and now is nearing 52 ah, even though overnight temps in our garage, where we charge, are still only in the 55-60 degree range.

I guess maybe the takeaway is to pursue a warranty claim against the battery when it is cold...

So I ran the car down to 24% SOC, let it sit 1 hour and 45 min, and then charged it up... took 4 hours and had some interesting spikes at the end of the charge cycle:

I got the "charging done," "charging started" repeat cycle about 3-4 times...it went from stopping at 99% to starting then stopping and starting at 100%. I waited till the charger told me the car stopped drawing power to disconnect and run the second test:

So it looks like Injuredagain is correct -- you get a different result when you get the car to a lower SOC then fully charge it. The GOM shows 63 miles -- about right for this time of year.

Another interesting thing... it says that the User Selected charge rate is 16A. We know the 453 charges at 32A. Possibility that the 451 has the same charger, but it's coded to work at half its capacity? Thoughts and opinions welcome...

49.2 vs 49.8; different of +/- 16,000 miles and a full year of age. I think my 13 is in good health. The 14 had a full charge from a low SOC earlier today, hence the 0 Days since test ran.

52Ah is the capacity when new, right? If so, the 2013 has 94% of its battery life and our 2014 has 95%. Guess I'll have to go visit Len this summer to see if I can still ebb 70-75 miles out of it. When I can't do that anymore, I'll believe I've seen noticeable capacity loss!

Also, looking at the charge cycle remaining count... these things won't have hit the 50% mark in charge cycles before ~350k miles. The next three years will tell us a lot about the battery's long term health... especially from the more active drivers like myself and our friend with a '14 hard top (has almost 60k miles now).

kcfoxie, my experience has been that if you do the deeper discharge followed by the charge to full, and do it a few times in a row, your battery capacity will gradually inch upward. Maybe do that in a month or two when the weather is consistently warmer? I'd bet both your vehicles will be over 50 ah.

Here is where mines was at the last time I ran the test:
