I found the site to order my California plates.
https://vrir.dmv.ca.gov/ipp2/initPers.do
but I'm confused by the statement that to order, the vehicle must be currently registered??? Does that mean when I pick up the car at the dealer I order the plates? Or is there a way to pre-order and have them waiting at the dealer? Or do I order from home after leaving the dealer? Advice anyone?

Haven't picked what the plate will say yet.....

cal custom license plates

I too have the same delivery date as you. I ordered my plates back in July, as it takes 8-16 weeks to get them. I just received a card from the dmv that they are in, they will hold the plates for 3 months since you will need a vin number to register them. I'd go ahead and order now if you want them.

I have two (2) sets of CA plates. I ordered them both on line, used my credit card for payment ($49.00). When they arrived at my local DMV, they sent me a card saying they were on hold. When my regular plates came from Sacramento, I took them to my local office and exchanged them. At that time you also get the year and month sticker. My advise is to call the toll free number and make an appointment for the exchange, it saves a long, long wait in line... A SMART 1 & SMRT TWO
