I never use the shift paddles since I started using pedal mapping, as the shifting in auto mode is now so sweet. So I ignore the paddles, and know what to do if I bump one accidentally. But I am concerned for my wife. I am worried that she may bump one and not remember the drill to go back to auto mode since she rarely has the honor of driving our 451. I could help her out by eliminating the possibility completely by disabling the paddles.

I thought I would ask this here first before trying to wade through the tedious WIS software. What is the easy way to nobble the paddles? Perhaps they have their own cable that simply unplugs, or a fuse?

Each paddle is held on by a small torquz head screw in the back, then a spade electrical connector. Ten minutes to take off or put back on.
My wife had the same problem when we had the 09.
