There is a smart for sale on Ebay. I quote the owner:
CAR STARTS RIGHT UP, IDLES FINE, WHEN YOU GIVE IT GAS IT HAS A MISS AND SMOKES, IT HAS SAT FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS"
What could be the possible problems if you have time to chime in...thanks!

More in the nature of: smart for sale..three tires round one oblong. Any ideas ont he problem? It seemed a simple set of possibilities, the car having set for 6 mos.
Not a smart reply...very mellow here. Just a question.

3 ways of calculating it: (1) Add up what you could get by parting it out knowing that the engine is bad and subtract the labour involved in parting it out. (2) If the car is otherwise decent, fair market value less the cost of a used engine less the installation cost. (3) Whatever the scrapper will pay per pound. Compare those three numbers ... some of them might be negative, in which case that option is not worth pursuing.

If it was worth fixing, the person selling the car should fix it. It's also possible, and you should assume, that the person selling the car has already tried the simple and cheap things (bad spark plug, bad O2 sensor, etc) and what remains is likely to be the expensive, internal engine stuff (broken piston ring, bad valve stem seals and bad valve guides, etc).

The problem is not enough infomation. How many miles on the car? Why has it been sitting for six months? Did the problem exist before the car was parked? Was it diagnosed at that time? Etc.

If you are considering a purchase, assume it has a bad engine and appraise it accordingly. Subtract for diagnosis required and towing or shipping.

Maybe try some diagnostic dice. :)
