On another thread JMfortwo gave us a nice history of his Smart car life, so I thought it would be nice to hear other stories. To start with you may want to see his Post on "Engine Light On Again...". Below is my overview.

We were an early adopter when reservations were announced; after seeing the car in Europe we put our $99 down in May 2007. The Yellow Passion we configured was shipped to Smart of Santa Barbara (Ca) in Aug of 2008, which was 50 miles away, what a thrill driving it home. We have since put 77K miles on it, it has been to Las Vegas (Jam the Dam II) and Tucson, otherwise it has been an around town car. We usually get 38-39 MPG with fairly aggressive driving.

Only two things have had to be repaired; The fuel pump-to-hose fitting on top of the gas tank cracked at the 50K mark (no reason could be found) and the pump had to be replaced; and I replaced the clutch actuator at 75K because it kept pulsating/clattering when driving less than 5 mph (parking, looking for a spot, etc). Every 6 months I removed the actuator and lubed it well inside, it would go quiet for about 1K miles and start making the noise again. Then late last year it started engaging the clutch VERY hard as soon as I let off the brake. I made several adjustments without success, this hard engagement would last a day or two then everything was fine for a couple of weeks and the cycle would repeat without any hard acceleration beforehand. Since the replacement it has worked very smooth.

In March of this year I came across a 2009 Black Brabus with only 19K miles being sold by bagman68 in Tx, bought it and had it transported to Ca in a covered carrier. It also is a great car and will last us a good 20 years. The gas mileage on the 2009 is coming in at 33-34 and I attribute that to 3 factors; the car came with 185/60 tires on all corners, a Smartmadness GoPedal, and the Smartmadness AutoFlash ,which modifies the shifting program. None of these enhancements are in the name of economy.

A neighbor wanted to buy our 2008, so we sold it to them and I am sure they will get at least another 75K miles out of it.

Denis,
Thanx for the spin off thread. Here, I can feel more comfortable blabbing on and on about my 13 years as a smart owner. For those that didn't read my other post, I got 189,000 miles out of my 2008 smart fortwo passion (henceforth called, "my 451") as an early-adopter, until it died back last November of a suspected blown head gasket).

Regarding repairs and maintenance:
I changed my own oil every 10k miles (although I did run long a couple times).
I swapped the front brake pads twice.
I bought rear brake shoes, but never installed them.
The factory battery was replaced under some early recall, at the same time they repaired/replaced my panoramic roof curtain/cover which was broken when shipped. I later installed a third battery and that was well into the 8th or 9th year.
I replaced multiple headlight, tail-light, and turn signal bulbs during the life of the 451, for some reason the car ate incandescent bulbs constantly. I was always quick to brag however that any bulb could be replaced without the use of tools.
I went through only three sets of tires, and for almost 200k miles that's incredible for me. I replaced my 3 spark plugs once.

Upgrades:
I purchased and installed an aftermarket Chinese Touch-Screen stereo ($440 at the time, under $200 now).
I upgraded the two factory speakers to a pair of Infinity's.
I installed a trailer hitch (mostly for the custom bicycle rack I made, but I did actually tow a couple things with it).

Honestly, that's about all the money I spent on that wonderful car in 13 years of ownership. If I see longevity anywhere near that in my current 2016 smart passion (henceforth called, "my 453") I would consider myself blessed, twice.

Jim

Taken at the bottom of Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world) at a smart car rallye in San Francisco in 2008...
What a blast that was.

My history, had lots of fun I had. One of the organizers, of the 2010 smart car nationals here in Kansas City. Never enjoyed a car like this one before. No mechanical issues at all.

KC... my wife is from KC, one of her sisters has a farm in Columbia. When her mother was in her 90's she moved to assisted living in Columbia. For 5 years my wife would spend a month 3 times a year keeping "mom" company so it wasn't all up to her sister. We bought a used 2008 Passion to keep there for her to use instead of renting a car. Here is the little guy stored with the "Big Guys". When her mom passed we sold the car for just a $1,000 less than we bought it for, hell a months worth of rental car was a grand!! The car was a big hit with everyone.

I’ve been to Columbia a couple times. 60 miles east of KC. You pass it, on the way to St. Louis.

The Harlem Edition was pick up as a toy to tinker with in NYC. The ability to park it any where with ease was what made it my only choice. The small criteria window turned into one of my best automotive relationships ever. 2014 451 passion coupe. Purchased in 2017 with 23,000 miles. Today ticked over 70,000 miles.. I expect to put 1,100 miles on it today, on the way home from Dayton Ohio. As he says on the show Harry's Garage "this car is just Ace"

Bought my 09 cabrio sight unseen through my local dealer from a place in Virginia and went and trailered it home(aside from pics) and aside from head gasket and timing chain/tensioner it’s been problem free.(had to replace the radiator fan not long after I got it as the one that was on it had seized and triggered the code)
Did a tune up while it was in for the other work.
Installed a aftermarket radio(50 dollar unit from Walmart that does CarPlay and android auto) and diamond audio three component speakers and a kenwood sub(temporary till I can do the under dash sub)
Aside from needing a new top it’s been a fun and awesome little car.
Took it on a road trip recently and got around 50mpg.
Planning on doing air bag suspension soon as I get them in and working on getting all the yellow panels to change the color.

Who makes a air bag suspension for a smart car?

Yeah if you just get the bags it’s cheaper(which is the route I’m going)
It was around 1300 for all four for mine.
I would do the brabus suspension but I live on a gravel road and wash boards and pot holes don’t take stiff suspensions too kindly.
I got mine from airbagit.com(emailed them so I could do the bag only option)
