We recently bought a 2015 Smart (fortwo/Passion) and cannot find anyone who is able to make a second key. We bought the correct blank fobs, but no local locksmith can program them. We were told we had to find a dealership. The dealerships we called stated it would be $500 and they had to order a key from Germany. Any suggestions? We live in Coastal North Carolina (the closest dealership is in Raleigh, about 3 hours away). Thank you.

Try M-B of Cary NC but expect $350 - 400!

Note to potential Buyers of any modern vehicle, if the Seller doesn’t have 2 keys require them to obtain a new key or deduct $500 from The Deal!

Welcome Anna - welcome to the forum. Your question has been asked a number of times and there are quite a few suggestions where to get keys cut. Some have had luck at Ace Hardwares - some have not. If you happen to have to go to the Cary dealer, I can say that they have treated me great there. I'm also a three hour drive away as I live in Ocean Isle Beach. Good to have another Smart car here on the NC coast - big coast though - which part are you on?

Hi Len, ACE didn't seem too helpful, but I'll try another one. We may have to go to the Cary dealer. We're in the Supply/Shallotte area, so not too far from you.

The Ace Hardware in Calabash is a newer and bigger store. They cut keys, but can they do what you need? There is also a shop in Shallotte that specializes in foreign cars. Forget the name, but it is right behind the CVS in Shallotte. Another local Smart car owner uses them. Also Jim's Car service on Route 17 heading south. Sure would be nice if you could save yourself a trip to Cary. Come to think of it, I seem to recall a member here who would cut a key for you at a very reasonable cost and AFAIK he could do it without you having to take the car to him. Anyone remember that member?

after a 3 week search online, I found a locksmith who had bought the device to allow him to make a key for my 2016, 453 smart car. This required device is about $3600.00 and few people are going to buy one!! They came to my house and cut/programmed a key I bought on line. It took 2 hrs to program and cost me $125.00. The key fob online was $17.00.
His comment, this was the hardest key he had ever programmed! Mercedes puts code in their electronics that keeps telling you to go to the dealership!! Another MB scam!!

Can anyone recommend a place for a new key in San Francisco? I bought a 2008 451 last year and it came with 1 non official key. Took it to Mercedes Dealership in South SF. Charged me nearly $500. It gets stuck sometimes and won't turn or sometimes can't take it out without lots of fiddling. Neither old or new key works in the glovebox or more importantly the door. I brought it back to Mercedes and they said it just might mean the tumbler is worn and likely needs to be changed. But shouldn't the new key work on the door? And glovebox? If the engine dies, I won't be able to get into the car with the fob, correct? Then I would be screwed.
I went back to using the key that came with the car since it works perfectly every time. Still for nearly $500 should have a perfect spare key. Thoughts?
