Probably the classic burnt exhaust valve issue. What codes is it throwing? P0303 is the usual suspect. My Dad purchased a 2011 smart back in 2016, and got a steal on it because it had an engine issue. Turned out to be burnt exhaust valves on #3 cylinder. We swapped in a low mileage used engine, and it's been perfect since.

Back when I was active on this forum, I warned people to not baby these cars. Drive them like you stole them. They love it. You drive them slow and lug the motor, and you burn exhaust valves. Still drive mine like I stole it to this day. But I was pretty universally panned for that statement at the time.... Guess I got the last laugh?

I’d agree with you. Got to burn the gunk out now and then, as Bill Cosby said in one of his skits. That’s where the tach comes in - rev it up but don’t overdo it. It’s pretty peppy at 5,000+ rpm.

Honestly, check car auction sites, craigslist, even for wrecks. ebay is where I found the seller for all the diesel smart parts. What specifically died?
it suddenly started billowing blue oil smoke and wouldn't keep running, or running just above idle. i would be able to clear it out/up by revving in order to make it the few miles home. strangely, after sitting and upon cold start it would start and idle/rev normally but only for a short moment or two and then it would start blowing blue...

i didn't drive anymore and i would occasionally start it to see if it had miraculously cured itself, but it was then sending a whitish smoke, but the vapor didn't smell like gasoline or antifreeze, and the oil is not milky or the coolant level down.

one man here on the forum suggested he had had a similar problem and for whatever reason his was sucking oil through the pcv. the hose is a biotch to get to, so i haven't tried disconnecting it.

the car doesn't seem to be displaying any codes....

I don't know how handy you are, and frankly don't know that problem. Depending on how dedicated you are for that car, and what the part is you could have the new part made. Like go to a machine shop with the part. I need this type of thing. But $120hr is a bit much. Mercedes charges $150 of $160hr for just time not parts soooooo. Sorry

At 113,000 miles, year 2012. Had a few weird issues come up in the time that I've owned her.
-32,000 miles. Fuel pump failed. Engine would turn over but not start. Corrected by swaping out fuel pump.
-39,000 miles(or was it 50k) Had a close call for a overheat issue. Turns out when I got the coolant flushed and replaced, the shop disconnected a knock sensor without my knolage in order to get the car to overheat. If they didnt correct their "boohooky" I would have sued them. After that, I started doing all the servicing myself if I can or take it down to the dealership for the most complicated servicing
-72,000ish miles Radator fan bearings go out. Its partly my fault because I drive on some roads thats got a few pothole fixes in the road. Lucky my extended warranty covered it and a $1100 bill became $500
-84000ish miles Upstream O2 sensor heator goes out. Also another "my fault" thing. Ive been using this Marvel Oil stuff since 50k miles and while it was helping my engine. It was guming up the O2 sensors so i switched to a degreaser gas solvent and the problem fixed itself. Never using gas "extras" again.
112,000 miles AC Blower goes out. I cleaned it up so far and swaped out the bad fuse and still no luck. If new fan dont fix it then ill get it pluged to the lighter to bypass the system.

I saw the zombie thread someone resurrected yesterday about mileage, and the recent responses had only one person clocking in over 40,000 miles (wdhitch, moderator, with over 60,000). I figure that anyone driving 20,000 miles a year is pretty dedicated (since it's about 500 per week). As of early Feb 2010, there are only a few of us over 40,000. 30,000 is pretty impressive, too.

Maybe we could make a little calendar of when we hit 10k mileposts. I went over my old posts (and a few others), and came up with some starter data. I'm about to hit 70,000 this Friday, so ...

MILES DRIVEN
date.who.(bought when)

70,000
02/12/10. unicycle. (05/09/08)

60,000
11/07/09. unicycle. (05/09/08)
??/??/09. wdhitch

50,000
07/03/09. KingNine.
??/??/09. jthw8
08/13/09. unicycle. (bought 05/09/08)

40,000
??/??/09. jthw8
05/21/09. unicycle. (bought 05/09/08)
??/??/10. bum-bling-B. (bought 04/26/08)

30,000
01/28/09. jthw8
02/23/09. unicycle. (bought 05/09/08)
03/??/09. okie_boy.
03/??/09. 2micro4u.
06/??/09. earldahl.
??/??/09. a2jack.

2micro4u was way up there, too, with 47,000 as of 7/6/09, just a few thousand behind me.
jthw8 was ahead of me near the 50,000 mark but later commented that I'd passed him.

And of course you can approximate. Add your info, and then print the list again.

There are also some Canadians who have over 100,000 miles on their 450s, and we should include them (maybe in a different color, for clarity).

147k and change on my '08. Once I hit 150, I'm going to take it to my local Mercedes stealership and see if they'll sign off on a high mileage award like I've got for my AMG.

Any major repairs? That means you've surpassed 4 times what soothsayers and fearmongers say about Smart cars! Keep it going!

Check car-part.com. recyclers from all over the country are part of that site. You should be able to find a low mileage used engine through there. But be warned, those smart engines usually run about $1500-$1800 for one with low miles. Got one for my Dad's smart from a yard in Indianapolis.

thanks.... can't yet buy a replacement Smart for that price; paid $2700 for the 09 with 105,000 miles (if i can get 200,000; great...). shipping would probably be pricey...
