Hello!

I have a Smart 451 convertible with a blown engine after only 110K Km
Benz wants $10,000 for a new one which they later changed to 5000 as the car is just out of warrantee.

Rebuilding would be 5K
Since the car is worth 8K at best my best option is the junk yard...

$2500 with 12000km on it
I am wondering if a 2010 engine will match with my 2008 trans?
In fact what it the latest year than I can replace a 2008 engine with?

Thanks

110k Kilometers? For those that are too lazy to convert, that's about 68k Miles.

Why did the engine blow? These engine reports are somewhat few and far in between, and seemingly only few have blown under the same exact circumstances.

Why not a smart cdi? It seems those things can't be stopped!

You must not be from around here

The smart cdi engine is even more blow-uppy than the Mitsubishi gas engine is. It has the same fault of a weak valvetrain and sketchy cooling system, plus leaking intercoolers, cracked exhaust manifolds, EGR system woes, blown turbos, glow plug issues, and all manner of little things. And besides that, in Canada, those only come in the form of the 450 model, and aside from all being older cars by now, those are missing various things that were beefed up or strengthened or otherwise fixed in the course of developing the 451. (Steering, brakes, clutch actuator, water getting into the SAM, reluctor rings, ...)

Occasionally one will encounter a smart cdi that has gotten high kilometers on it ... but usually with a fair bit of coaxing and money spent.

I brought my 451 to a local service guy for a checkup several months ago, and he says mine was one of the first he had worked on. Almost all his business is with 450s. Do the math ...

Unknown.. The car was properly maintained at the Benz dealer... They say either the piston rod snapped or the piston head gave way. Either way its done..
