Have had my original wiper blades sitting on my work bench since I replaced them a year ago. Been trying to see if only the rubber insert can be replaced. My initial assessment is that it cannot and that the entire unit must be replaced. Is that correct? I'd like to clean off my work bench.

Just replaced my wipers and yes, you need to replace the whole head. No inserts. All wipers will come with adaptors to fit the end of the wiper arm.
