Reset the maintenance reminder on both of my Smarts on the first try today. That's really a first. I think I know the secret, but will I remember it the next time? I think the key is quickly pushing the button in Step 2.

1. Turn key to position 1

2. As soon as the cluster shows "Smart," double click the button quickly
to bring up the maintenance indicator.

3. Release the button and turn the key off.

4. Quickly press and hold the button and turn the key back to position
1. This is while the cluster still has the maintenance reminder on.

5. Hold the button in until it resets to 10K.

I like to share findings on forums too. Two reasons. One, it helps you remember, and two, you can reference your post for instructions in the future!

Yeh, the 451 service reset is hellish as you have to time the button presses to perfection, or it does not work. Used to take me 3 or 4 attempts LOL, I now have the 453 and service reset is simple, you just go to the service messaging screen using the up or down buttons on the steering wheel, and hold OK button on the steering wheel, until it flashes, keep holding OK button for what seems a long time, and then it resets for another year. far simpler. Note that I hate the '30 day visual countdown to service' message, so I just reset so i do not see that.
