Hello everyone!
I have been bitten by smart bugs and am suffering from smart fever.
I am especially looking for a smart diesel, which I believe is available only in the 450 style car.
Would be great to know if there's one around.
Prefer one that is intact and not the victim of an accident.
However, I would consider buying a 450 diesel and a 450 diesel parts car (OM660 plus transmission).
Am very familiar with MB diesels from 1950-1991, before the electronic controls, turbo or NA.
Please feel free to send me messages.
I do have some cash and am interested as I retire, buy a farm with a 4000 sq ft building in which to store the cars and work on them.
Thank you!

I have one. I built it and it's as good as new. Brand new chassis and brand new engine and drivetrain. Has about 500 total miles on it. It's pretty but it's not a cheap beater.

In fact, if you are interested in building your own, I have a chassis and Leonard in TN has a new diesel engine and drive train. Building one is not for the faint of heart but it is fun and satisfying.
Dan, is that the car I saw with the sliding roof? If so it's basically the best 450 diesel in the nation!

Sadly, the cabrio decided to stop actuating its transmission. Then while I was trying to fix and troubleshoot it the alternator seized. Ah, the 450 life. lol

Strelnik, he has a brand new 450 roller that would make a fantastic platform for a DIY diesel transplant. But like he said, not for the faint at heart or like me, the "short on tools". lol
Hi MM, Thanks for the plug on the Diesel. You are probalby correct. It's not a perfect car but I dont think there is a better Diesel 450 in the country. I had to change an accuator in my gasser. Its a pretty easy swap if you take the rear wheel/tire off. You can use the bolt on the end of the alternator to free it up. I dont know it this is a perminent fix but it has worked for me in the past. I got that tip from Leroy. T

Miss Mercedes,
Through an accident of fate, I won an auction for 27 boxes of Snap-On tools, which I have been selling part time for years to get rid of. If you told me what you needed, and were willing to pay the gas in my one-ton diesel, I might visit once the weather gets better.
I say that because Wednesday, I go to the doctor's to see if I have a recurrence of the pneumonia which kept me sidelined for 42 last Christmas. If not, I visit one guy to pick up the 451 panels I bought, and another to pick up a 451 with a damaged engine. I now need to get a hold of Dan and Leonard and talk about cost and logistics.
Maybe I could trade them for a small Mercedes diesel that they might want to work on? I still need to know if the 450 body panels will fit the 451 and vice versa.
Very little is interchangeable between generations. The cars don't share a single panel with one another.

Thank you for this. Any idea if the transmission on the 450 is the same as the transmission on the 451?
Leonard and Dan, please contact me through private message. I'm at a conference locally, but have evening time. Thanks

It's not. It's best to assume no parts are interchangeable. And for any parts that are, the 451 version is going to be cheaper, anyway. They may look similar but they share very very little in common. I'm talking they share small stuff like steering column innards. I don't think they share a single powertrain part. Heck, the 451's drive unit (the center console with the gearshifter) is a modified version of the roadster's drive unit.

I marvel at your knowledge! I was working in Stuttgart when the car first came out, then went to Bosnia for NATO and was focused on other items until I came back to a job at Daimler Chrysler.
