For those like me, who were just thinking about what to do WHEN my HV pack died, and know that Mercedes has a rebuilt one available in Germany (1 left) part number 7893400003 0 which takes 3 week to get to the US AND doesnt include shipping or installation, for $22,940.....................

YAY !! I found GreenTecAuto who rebuilds our 17.6 kW packs have shops all over the country.
Pop them up on the computer, look at the map, and know that you can keep your smartED going and KEEP it with the knowledge that they are in the BUSINESS of rebuilding our types of packs, and started in late 2023. They rebuild in KC Missouri, have a proprietary method, ship it to their installation site, which has the software to set your car up with the new pack, and do it right. Your old pack is disassembled, and reworked, and goes on to the next guy. GREAT !

I WILL use this business, as I am a MidWesterner by birth, our word is our bond etc.. They rebuild which is located in Missouri. SHOW ME STATE.
Cost is high but so is everything. Scot says that they forsee packs pricing decreasing, as they get more smarts to work with.
Battery Pack Rebuilt, (Even Mercedes and Tesla Rebuild theirs). $12,000
Install 1,000
I will pay that.
Contact Scott Hale 913-325-2871 directly. Very knowledgable. Tell them Dr Alexander sent you.

One more Project, VAHALA at an EV Clinic in the EU. This is Sustainability we need as smart ED owners.
Here is his YouTube story about the same topic:
Let me know if you all like this. I hope we can collectively find someone in the USA doing NEW CELLS .

This is all fascinating! But many of the posts about dead smarts seem to indicate not battery failure, but component failure of the charging system. Do these rebuilds fix that too?
Plus I think there’s a limit to what I would pay to keep my smart on the road. I think $8k is tops for me, maybe less.
What about you guys? What is your maximum repair bill?

Day, I know most these companies I have looked at Rebuild a OEM product, and reset BMS parameters.
GreenTec SCOTT said that you have to bring your smart INTO their facility because they are resetting the car and making the whole system work. THEN they give a a guarantee. I think you should definitely ask questions !
Speaking about knowing your Electric, is a capable OBD2 Reader FOR The smart. check it out above.

Greg,
Thanks for the information! I googled the business name and found out they have an location less than 20 miles from me in Phoenix, AZ. I've talked with Mercedes, and several battery companies in my area, and searched the web, but the name "green tec auto" never popped up!
I had the OEM 12V battery go suddenly go dead on my 2015 Smart ED last Aug. And even though I had the Smart 110V charger connected to the car, the BMS decided to discharge the HV pack and Mercedes Service said that it had to be replaced @ $26K. Really pissed me off because the car has been returned to the dealer for annual service every year since it was purchased, and the year before the service techs updated the BMS programming, and the HV battery condition report indicated all 93 cells still above 97%. And they claimed that the HV battery is not under warranty in 2023. Mercedes will not honor the supposed EPA mandated 10 warranty that I have read about on this and other EV forums.
You asked how much some of us are willing to pay to replace the battery. I my case, my 88 yr father bought this '15 ED in '18 for $8K and it only had about 12,400 miles on it. We both used it for short errands and shopping trips, about twice a week. My Dad passed away in July '22 at 93, and I now own little "Sparky". It now has only 18,500 miles on it, has had annual service at Mercedes since Dad bought it, and the tires have only 900 miles on them. So, with very little of my own money invested into "Sparky", I'm willing to spend a bit more to keep this little guy on the road then most people. But $26, is WAY out there. Maybe I'll go for half that.
Otherwise, I'll just keep old Sparky as spare body, interior, and suspension parts for my '08 Smart Turbo'ed 1 liter Passion coupe. And wait for my 1000 mile range Aptera EV to be built in 2026.

Then I guess a repaired car with fresh pack is worth more than that?

I don't think so. I bought a 2017 Smart For Two Prime model in the midnight blue and black combo. I paid $11,500 plus tax, paid cash, and it had a NEW main battery replaced in 2021. Everything is in near mint condition, and the car is beautiful...even smells like a new car. I applied for the 30% tax credit ($4,000 max), so my final cost for the car is around $9,000. I hope I won; never need another main battery.

Hi
I thought I look into the forum. After I got my battery fixed and re-intalled, I use the car for weekend drives. I noticed the range was down to 40 miles and thought it is my driving style and the cold weather. I checked my battery and one cell is a problem cell that lowers the miles. My read out shows many cell in the 175K As. Some in the 165 K As, and down to 155 K As and one cell at 137k As. A new cell should show 180 k As (180.000 Ampere Second or 50Ah) I calculated 137K As is the 40 miles. Replacing the one of the three Bank would be easy. But 40 miles is still good enough for grocery shopping.
I had to send my BMS to Lithuania to get it reprogrammed. I got a current sensor from Germany. I think the current sensor are propitiatory and not available on the open market.

Did you replace the battery pack with GreenTec? How did it go? How much did you pay? We may be facing the same issue with our 2014 Fortwo ED.
