I got a call yesterday from someone at smart USA to follow up on a minor issue noted during my delivery. When I called her back today, I happened to ask about plans for a service manual, she told me they have something in the works for the near future. It won't be a paper manual, but there will be something available for download (at a cost, but she didn't say how much) within the next few months. I tried to pin her down on when this would be available, but the most she would say is maybe sometime in July.

I asked, and she said it was OK to post this information here.

I also had a communication from smartusa regarding online service manuals. I'll give them another month and I'll contact them again. I very much expressed my concern about amount for subscription, asking them to only charge for maintaining the system and not trying to make it a money making product line. Owners and independent garages won't be able to afford high subscription fees like major dealers. My Mini dealer pays several thousand dollars a year for that service.

I got everything I will ever want from MBUSA for my ML350 on one CD. I hope that the same type of information will be avaliable soon for the Smart!! it is great and nice to have the official information.

I asked if it was going to be downloadable so I could use it on my laptop without web access, and she said yes. That implies to me that it won't be by subscription, but they could always use custom software to time-limit its use, I suppose. I hope not.
