curious what improvements have been made by year for the US fortwo..

i know something changed with the pedal in 09 to make shifting less jarring?

obviously the lower exterior panels changed in 12'

curious what other changes have been made, inside/outside and engine wise over the years.

here is a brief rundown:

'09, added two new colors, red & grey, deleted two, yellow & orange-red. 2.0 trans software update. Brabus (neutered version) available
'10 changed the door panels & interior trim slightly.
'11 body color lower panels, added light blue, took away dark blue. Added matte green(lightshine). Added cruise
'12 new dash, new radio options,
'13 modest re-style: new lower panels, new grill, matte grey color, yet another trans update. Brabus is back( still neutered in US)

This isn't a complete list, but you get the idea....:)

WNB08 - The new headunits, colored lower valences (and fuel door), and new dashboard were all MY2011 upgrades :)

Adding onto that though...

2011 - More airbags (total of 8), Lightshine special edition (matte green or light blue), new dashboard, surround sound, rear speakers, wider tires, better navigation system, iPod integration, bluetooth, interior fabric improvements, return of automatic wipers and lights.

2012 - Automatic wipers/lights standard on passion models, 4yr/50k warranty, new tranny firmware.

2013 - New roof for passion coupe, slight body changes, addition of Brabus Tailor Made Program, Iceshine special edition, Sharpred special edition, leather dash option...

The trans updates eliminate some reverse gear issues (limp home mode as well), as well as recalibrated the shifting to be smoother. :)
Do all year models before 2013 get the updated trans firmware for free? Because if so, I'll quit looking at just getting a 2013 smart. I'm gonna be upset if I find a 2011 that has everything I want but has a crazing glass roof. Perhaps I can try and get MB/Smart to replace a roof that is crazing despite being out of warranty. I guess that would be the only real reason to get a 2013 is for a roof that doesn't craze...

Supposedly Mercedes made a running change to the roofs to eliminate crazing. We'll see...

In 2010, smart ran a short run of special edition pures called "chrome yellow". Your yellow is a little more pale than the 2008 yellow. :)

They did the same thing in 2011 with a special "white tridion" color option for passions. My dealer uses one as a loaner!

That's the thing about smart, they often release special colors and some special edition cars without really telling anyone!

The wheels and tires are different sizes fot a good reason; your safety. I know, they aren't convenient, but that's the car you bought, isn't it?

On changes: Maybe Smart will get smart and make a good change; back to the more reliable and tighter 450 model. You guys with 451s up there do seem to have your share of troubles.

The wheels and tires are that size for many reasons. Mostly a compromise between factors. Putting bigger tires on the front does not necessarily mean that it is unsafe. You will get slightly worse gas mileage. I guess Brabus package makes the smart unsafe also? It changes the tire size.
