I’m at about 50,600 miles on my 2011 and recently changed oil, oil filter, and engine air intake filter about 1500 miles ago. Today on my drive home the D indicating the vehicle is in drive started flashing and I’m showing the big and small wrench in the left with the upper one flashing. The gear indicator flashes for all gears in manual and automatic including reverse. No noticeable difference in driving characteristics or handling.
Manual makes it sound like it’s in limp home mode but doesn’t appear to be doing anything differently than it was. Reset the service interval to clear it out and it reset to 10,000 miles but the wrenches stayed visible with the top one flashing and the D is still blinking whenever I put it in gear.
I’m like three hours from a Smart Center so I’d like to fix it myself if possible but not sure what it could be.
I’ve never serviced the transmission as I bought it at 38,000 miles. Maybe due for new transmission fluid? Clutch actuator issue?

connections seem fine. And battery hasn’t had any issues as far as week starts or having been drained by leaving lights on or anything. OBD codes show 410, 442, and 455. Which if that makes sense to anyone here, feel free to chime in on that too. Gas cap is firmly seated and I haven’t topped off the fuel like they warn against. I’m in NC and am required to do emissions testing so best guess on whether that will pass with those codes?

Try a reteach…

  • Step on the brake
  • Turn the key to the “on” position, but don’t start the car.
  • Slowly cycle through the gears, pausing at each position. You should hear the shift motor and clutch actuator moving.
  • Slowly cycle back through the gears to Park.
  • Take your foot off the brake
  • Turn the key off
  • I’ve heard that locking and unlocking the doors at this step is necessary , but I’m not convinced. You can try it anyway.
  • Wait a few moments.
  • Restart the car. The clutch should function again. Some have reported disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes helps.

Is there anything that happens to indicate that the reteach process was done correctly? Is the lock and unlock done from the key fob or the switch inside?

So I don’t hear anything happening. First position for the key is all the way to the detent where if you go any farther, the engine will start, right? When I turn it to that position and start shifting, I don’t hear any clicking underneath. When I move the shifter to a new gear, it will show the appropriate R or N or D (all flashing). But when I start the car, I can actually hear it shifting into those gears, but not when the engine isn’t running.
So maybe gummed up actuator?
or maybe battery is too weak to power the actuator without the alternator’s assistance?

…the clutch actuator motor connects the engine to the transmission…
…the gear selector motors do what the name implies…selects the gear to data collected from the gear selector lever…paddle levers and vehicle engine/car speed…
…the gear motors carbon build up and oil vapors gum up the armature/commutator creating a short that the computer recognizes as invalid thus preventing a gear selection and the flashing D as the malfunction message…
…my recommendation is to look at the gear selector motors…done it twice to my bride’s ride clearing it back to normal operating mode…

jetfuel…my take on it..

okay, I cleaned the actuator and got it put back in the same position it was. Did the reteach and the three bars went away, but now I when I shift into reverse, the reverse lights come on but the speedo says neutral and giving it gas goes nowhere. Same with drive. Unless you guys have any ideas, I might have just immobilized this thing
