i may be deaf dumb and blind but i have not been able to figure out how the gas door holds the cap while refueling other than just let it dangle

It screws onto the inside of the gas door. Takes about two or three turns to secure. Give it a try and it will work.
Not sure if you have a 451 or a 453, so I'll give both!
453: There's technically a clip for the cap, but it's never worked for me. Using advice from our awesome Kamaal, I just hang the cap from the lower hook protruding from the door.
451: There's a circular ledge embedded in the fuel door. I place my cap right on it. The cap has channels that should "lock" it into place. Works like a charm for me.
