What the heck is going on???? Had the 10K service done a few months ago, reset the service indicator. Today for some bizarre reason, The two wrench symbol os on (and flashing) and when I put it in Drive or Reverse, the gear display is flashing.... Seems to drive OK just a little flashing. The maint indicator says 6700 miles until service is due.

Anybody got any ideas??

I tried shutting it off, going through the gears with the motor off and key on , no change.

Oh, I see... I just had the 10K service done like 2 months ago, the service countdown says 6,700 miles to go until next service is due....

I just went out and started it up, drove a few blocks and everything is back to normal.....GUYS!! The Flames Aren't WORKING!!!!

Thanks for the help Tbone28 (don't want to sound un-grateful) but this thing has me nervous when strange things happen. it is getting close to the miles where I had the problem with my 2008...

My reply wasn't intended to "solve" your problem. I was just relaying what the double wrench means. It was intended to imply that, since you just had your 10K service, you may want to bring your car back to the dealer.

I will be giving them a call in the morning as you said, just wondering if anyone has seen this happen. I wasn't aware that the flashing wrench means service is due, as I have not put enough miles on a smart yet (16k on my 08, 13K on my 09). I noticed only the rear wrench was flashing. The only wrench symbol I have seen is the 10k one and it only appeared when the car started up, then went away after a bit. This one did not go away the whole time I was driving.

P.S. 93 miles to dealer each way so it means time off work to take it in.

Yep - happened to me too early on. My car was still under break-in, and I was accelerating but was forced to floor it suddenly to get out of the way of an oncoming vehicle (I shouldn't have turned when I did). It was shifting when I kicked it down, and it got rather confused and banged into first gear, and then went into limp mode.

I was about 2 blocks from home, so I got it to my parking spot and re-taught it and it has been fine since. Apparently - if it fails the re-teaching, the car renders itself undrivable - hence my desire to get it into my own garage.

By re-teaching the trans, do you mean turn on the key and go theough each gear (DNRP ) I did that but it didn't eseem to make any difference. I let it sit for about 45 min and it got better on it's own(??) I neversaw a check engine light or anything and it did seem to run OK,

I did take it through one of those automatic car wash places maybe that with the cooler temps caused problems??

I would check with some of the people who have had their clutches go bad prematurely. It sounds similar to what I've heard happen to them in the early stages. Not what I think you want to hear, but something to look into.

(FWIW, I had the SAME problem after going through an automatic car wash about 10k miles ago - never happened again after that)
