It doesn't hurt to call or e-mail the dealer, also gives them a heads up if they have to get parts from across the pond.

No, cruise control is the smart supplied broomstick-under-the-dash mod.

 

Oh crap, I thought that was the jack stand that was supposed to go with the hidden spare, scissor jack, and lug wrench. I thought it looked a bit tall for a stand...

 

My lights are often on as well. I took it in to the dealer and they essentially said nothing could be done. They reset the computer, which did nothing, and were supposed to contact the service gurus and get back to me. I haven't heard anything back from them and it has been over a month.

 

I thought I read somewhere on Evilution's site a procedure for enabling/disabling the DRL's.

 

Apparently this can be done on the Euro smarts, possibly through their smart centers. At this point, that info, if it exists, hasn't been passed to the smart USA centers, and the Canadian cars already have DRLs. I just turn the low beams on after starting the car and drive it that way.

NCC1701... the issue has cropped up a few times but not a lot.... I think the fix was to first try a re-code of the SAM if still fail then the hoickey puck replaced is the fix.... I have found over ther years a lot of weird electrical faults can traced to loose connectors, bad pins inside the connectors, or faulty grounds

DRL is in the car from the factory... our USA versions have the SAM program defautled to off... we have been waiting for 7 months for those super nice and intelegent engineers to send the USA smart dealers the computer code to re-enable the feature....

The Radio 10 also has RDS built into it..but the North American versions has it defaulted off and no menu enable program that we can find..

Just a few things those engineers and marketing folks figured we did not need or want

 

I don't know what SAM is. A loose connection, maybe. I just assumed the sensor had a problem. Maybe it does. I have no burning desire for DRL and I just want the Auto position to function as designed. It DID function as designed until a couple of days ago, this is a new development. Not worth a 600 mile round trip to the dealer in and of itself. But, if a few more nuisances crop up, it is on my list for them.

Regarding RDS, even if it were enabled it wouldn't work in the US if broadcasters aren't transmitting the data.

Once I thought mine were stuck on, so I put it in manual-ON for a couple of minutes, then manual-OFF for a couple of minutes, then back in auto-position. They have been working reliably ever since. I should add that mine do come on with slightly low light levels, and are only off in full sun.

 

SAM =

Signal Acquisition & Actuation Module

In our smart car it and the fuse panel are in the same package

The SAM is a CAN bus item that acts as a fairly sophisticate clearing house to detect the state of many components and activate or de activate some services like the headlights and the logic associated with sensor based activation...

You placed the switch in Auto mode... the SAM should only energize the head light relays when it senses the signal from the hockey puck sensor has a low light value

Possible faults if Lights are one in day light

Stuck relay(s)
Faulty SAM logic
Faulty daylight sensor
CAN-Bus signal ground on low or high side (shorted wires,(water ingress to SAM unit)
CAN-Bus signal open on low or high side (loose connector pin, broken wire)​

 

As I mentioned in another thread today, I put a 3/4 inch round black vinyl tape patch over the center of the light sensor and now have DRL. The rain sensing wipers still work great and the wipers don't move the tape. I do want to be seen, so that's my fix until the codes are released by the German/French smart engineers.

NYS requires lights on when wipers on.

I was hung-up on getting DRL in my cabriolet and as it wasn't possible in US I lost interest. However my problem today (its raining) is that in NY we must have our lights on when it is raining. If it is very foggy or cloudy they will go on, but in sunlight I have to remember to switch from AUTO to "on". Is there a way to connect the lights on with wipers? Maybe a software can do it? My gosh. You really want DRLs? They waste gas, have never been shown to be effective in reducing accidents, and are closely correlated to collisions with cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists. (70% of motorcycle accidents are caused by motorists "not seeing" the cyclists.) DRLs are banned in France and Austria. Great Britain rejected them, commenting that not enough attention has been paid to vulnerable users (cyclists) and that the extant research studies are defective.

Is there anything so wasteful as a sea of cars going down the interstate, headlights on, sun shining brightly?

Yeah DRLs go down in history with the stupid "third brake light" as being the cause of hundreds of millions of dollars in wasted money. DRLs are as effective as deer whistles.
