So, How do you like taking your car into the MB dealership to be serviced, repaired etc.? Personally, I have only taken my car to the MB dealer 3 times and when I pulled in, you could almost see the mechanic feel as if he had drawn the short straw. These mechanics are used to working on VERY expensive, luxurious automobiles and in drives this " clown car". (Just kidding)
I bought my Smart new in 2008, received in about 5 months after ordering it online with $100 down. I like the car and I do any mechanical work on it to avoid the dealership, WHICH, I am very lucky that it is only 20 miles away in Amherst NY. I definitely would not buy another one simply because you are held hostage to the brand.
I have 52,000 miles on it and after almost 8yrs. just replaced the battery last week. I (myself) have replaced front struts, all four springs, spark plugs, front rotors and pads at 47,000 miles. I replaced all 4 tires at around 45,000 miles, unfortunately, I could not find anyone that could do an alignment because the propriety of the car, had to take it to MB and cost me $ 140. The best was the alternator. It decided to die and after checking everywhere online including Canada and the U.K......I had to order it from .......MB ! ! I think it was close $340. I installed it myself and it wasn't all that bad if you don't mind lowering the right side of the engine about 4 inches and being a contortionist. The flex pipe on the muffler just went and I will be laying on my back again installing a new flex pipe , after some modifications and welding because pray-tell they want you to buy a whole new muffler. I can have the whole front saddle off the car in probably less than 20 minutes now.!!!!! Throw in having to run high octane gas, truly makes one wonder how SMART I was purchasing the car.
But, I do like driving it .........but the fact is, now days there are quite a few vehicles that can get close to the city MPG and better on highway MPG according to the NTSB and as a bonus, they have a back seat ! ! ! LOL
I know I sound bitter but my wife and I have truly enjoyed the car but I cannot imagine anyone who isn't mechanically inclined buying the Smart and saying they'd buy another.
