Recently I've seen and read about an airbag problem regarding a few car brands including M/B, anybody heard if this extends to our smarts?

Mercedes-Benz, Honda and FCA vehicles among millions believed affected in the US

February 5, 2016

Unrelated to the Takata airbag crisis, another major airbag recall is taking shape Continental Automotive Systems. The supplier is recalling airbag control modules from some 5 million vehicles, Reuters reports, due to potential defects. The defective modules were installed on Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Fiat Chrysler and potentially other vehicles from 2006 through 2010.

I'm curious why everyone thinks the Smart is a Mercedes product? It is only marketed and distributed by Mercedes Benz. It is a Chrysler made in France product......If it makes you feel better to say you have a MB car.....people are snickering behind your back believe me.....

Yesterday my friends were asking why I "still" had the Mercedes-Benz keychain that was given to me when I picked up the car. I explained it has the dealerships phone number and roadside assistance numbers engraved on the back.

Everything from the introduction and test drive, to the final sale and delivery took place inside the benz dealership with mercedes-benz employees!

If it walks like a duck, and drives like a duck, quack, quack.

So, How do you like taking your car into the MB dealership to be serviced, repaired etc.? Personally, I have only taken my car to the MB dealer 3 times and when I pulled in, you could almost see the mechanic feel as if he had drawn the short straw. These mechanics are used to working on VERY expensive, luxurious automobiles and in drives this " clown car". (Just kidding)
I bought my Smart new in 2008, received in about 5 months after ordering it online with $100 down. I like the car and I do any mechanical work on it to avoid the dealership, WHICH, I am very lucky that it is only 20 miles away in Amherst NY. I definitely would not buy another one simply because you are held hostage to the brand.

I have 52,000 miles on it and after almost 8yrs. just replaced the battery last week. I (myself) have replaced front struts, all four springs, spark plugs, front rotors and pads at 47,000 miles. I replaced all 4 tires at around 45,000 miles, unfortunately, I could not find anyone that could do an alignment because the propriety of the car, had to take it to MB and cost me $ 140. The best was the alternator. It decided to die and after checking everywhere online including Canada and the U.K......I had to order it from .......MB ! ! I think it was close $340. I installed it myself and it wasn't all that bad if you don't mind lowering the right side of the engine about 4 inches and being a contortionist. The flex pipe on the muffler just went and I will be laying on my back again installing a new flex pipe , after some modifications and welding because pray-tell they want you to buy a whole new muffler. I can have the whole front saddle off the car in probably less than 20 minutes now.!!!!! Throw in having to run high octane gas, truly makes one wonder how SMART I was purchasing the car.
But, I do like driving it .........but the fact is, now days there are quite a few vehicles that can get close to the city MPG and better on highway MPG according to the NTSB and as a bonus, they have a back seat ! ! ! LOL

I know I sound bitter but my wife and I have truly enjoyed the car but I cannot imagine anyone who isn't mechanically inclined buying the Smart and saying they'd buy another.

RJDJ22,
I have not taken it back into the Mercedes-Benz yet for service. I enjoy driving my Smarty Gofer all over the place, reminds me of my old VW's bugs and the VW station wagon I had in Germany. I just need to pick up a couple things at the dealer Smart center of Riverside, such as the missing plug for the tow hook and the spare light bulbs kit.

While we are wandering around lost and off topic I just thought I'd mention that my dogs, (2 mini dachshunds and a mini schnauzer) love to turn the 4 way flashers/hazard lights on. Most often when left even briefly alone in our smart.:D

This is in the news again today. Any information on smarts? I couldn't find anything on recalls.gov.

Has anyone determined the manufacturer of our airbags?
One report this afternoon said airbags in hot humid climates are more apt to be a problem, especially those which are 8-9 years old! Yikes! I live in Florida and drive a nearly 8 year old smart.

Any updates relevant to us?

EDIT: Digging further. Looks like we're in the clear if this is credible and complete:

I checked out the linked Mercedes web page.

None of my 3 VINs (1-2008, 2-2009) come up with anything.

The "TAKATA Airbag Inflator Recall" link on that page doesn't show any smart effectivity.

I seem to remember reading that our smarts don't use Takata airbags, but I can't find the reference.
