"Wrench" symbol warning light questions

I am closing in on 10,000 miles and I am now seeing a "wrench" symbol when I first start up the car. I'm guessing that it is a signal that it is time for an oil change??? My owners manual says there is a button to push that is supposed to tell me what the message is but I can't make it come up. Anyway, am I correct that it probably means I am due to change the oil? Also, is there any other service that is due at 10,000 miles? I would like to do the oil change myself, using a Bosch filter. Will the "wrench" signal automatically reset, or is there a way for the car to record that the oil has been changed? Since the Portland Smart Center closed I feel that I may be on my own for most minor maintenance but I want to make sure I follow all servicing guidelines. Any help is much appreciated!!!
Thanks, Brett

You are correct Brett !!!!

The 1 wrench comes on at 10k OR 1 year (whichever comes first) telling you it's time to do the 10K maintenance (in the manual) or here Maintenance Schedule

2 wrenches will come on at 20K or another year and then it alternates every 10K :)

It does NOT reset itself....you do it like this Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia

:welcome: to SCOA and enjoy :D

Yup- I've done it dozens of times. Had some friends who didn't believe it try. They can reset their own, but not mine. The end result is always, oop's, might need to take it to the dealer. I'm thinking there might be a problem in the button itself. No matter what you do, it just resets the od tripper.

I was told by smart that some of the early smarts couldn't be reset with the buttons and had to be reset by using their computer. They didn't say what model or serial number range, just that it does happen.

First time I reset mine, I tried about a dozen times. apparently after a few tries, the computer locks you out. I tried the next dday and it worked the first time. Can't say if it was the car, or me but sometimes you just have to walk away.

There are 2 different ways to reset the counter. the method above, and another method where you hold the button down on the second press.

That's probably the issue. It never shows the wrench symbol on the second hit. Even tried different combinations over the months. The MB dealer reset it for me the first time. I'm not going to worry about it untill I have to go to the dealer for some reason.

-224 and counting.

It is very easy for some and difficult for others. It's all in the timing. Turn ignition key to on (do not start) tap button on lower left side of instrument cluster twice. Turn off key. Within ten seconds, turn key back on while holding down button. Indicator should re-set in about 10 seconds. For a better description, do a search on the forum for resetting flashing wrench. You will see a link to the Evilution site that gives an easy to understand tutorial how to reset the wrench. Good luck.

Welcome to SCoA! If it's a single wrench it should also show a number next to it when the car is first turned on - that's the number of days overdue for service. At a minimum the smart gets an oil and filter change every 10K miles or annually.
Service requirements are here: https://www.smartusa.com/service-and-maintenance

PS - good to see another Ohio owner here; hope you can join us for this year's April Fools rally. :)

What up Y'll ? Thx info there... Can you you assist us as well? My Pop bought a used Smart a few years back with 11k, and your right... within a 100 miles of owning it the (1)one wrench was up... so like a good little dummy I said "no worry Pops I'll read the manual n we'll figure it out." so what ever I read led me to the Mercedes dealr in SD and an expensive oil change later everything is grt till now when I see the wrench display again and so I refresh with the manual and now I remember there's (2)two wrenches over a single (as you most likely have seen) and I am left wondering if Y'll could clue us in as to figuring out if we need Service or just to Learn how to clear maintenance and wrench warning lights. oh yeah the maintenance light is on too...
Car is running just fine No noticeable problems. Thank you for being here.

If the odometer returns after a bit, it is a maintenance reminder. If the engine symbol is lit, you have another problem. The engine light (looks like an engine) is lit, there should be a stored code that can help tell what is wrong. You will need an OBDII code reader to get the code.Once you have that, you can look up what the error is.

There are codes specific to smart, and not all codes can be read by a generic reader Most auto parts stores will read the code for you, but won't reset the code. Once you have the code, we can help translate it to find the problem. Could be as simple as a loose gas cap.

I can never get this to work. I tried for days on end, disconnected the battery, waited for days in between. Tried a pro scanner and it could not reset the service indicator. Tried three different ways as found on the internet. Noting worked. Took it to Smart Madness and he reset it in 5 seconds first try, I guess it takes a magic touch. Picked up a second Smart brabus and its -48000 miles past service according to the indicator. I tried again and was only able to get it to blink. No luck resetting. Guess will have to take a trip back to Smart Madness.
